NBN Co, the company specifically created to design, build and manage the NBN, has announced 19 locations for stage two of the NBN’s development.
The 19 announced second release sites are made up of 14 fresh locations as well as 5 sites residing next to current 1st release installations.
New Sites
- ACT – Gungahlin
- Northern Territory – Casuarina;
- NSW – Riverstone (western Sydney), Coffs Harbour;
- Queensland – Brisbane (inner north), Springfield Lakes, Toowoomba;
- South Australia – Modbury, Prospect;
- Victoria – Bacchus Marsh, South Morang (Melbourne);

Existing Sites to be enhanced
- NSW – Minnamurra/Kiama Downs (Kiama) and Armidale.
- QLD – Townsville
- SA – Willunga (Seaford/McLaren Vale)
- Vic – Brunswick in Melbourne
NBN Co state that the sites were selected based on a number of criteria including;
- The level of existing broadband infrastructure
- Engineering and Construction needs
- Network Design
- Engagement of Local Government
- Community Reception
It is said that the 19 sites will supply approximately 57,000 premises (approx 3000 per site). In reality though this figure will probably change some once local considerations are taken into account.
The way in which the network has been designed is so that it is a modular system. The base level module covers about 3000 sites. These modules are then linked through to the retail providers via the FSA’s (Fiber Servicing Area) and eventually the POI’s (Points of Interconnect).
“The first and second release sites are the areas from which we can expect to see future rollout – extending and expanding the network. We will also see the announcement of additional release sites as the national rollout ramps up,” Mr Quigley said.
Construction on the first release site began July 2010 allowing the second release to commence during the last quarter of 2011. Of course this is all for the mainland, Tasmania has a three stage rollout that also began July 2010 and is underway.
